School is not what it used to be.

A few decades ago, before the Internet and the ease of sharing knowledge globally, it was not so easy to become educated and learn new skills. Formal education was one of the only viable options for many people.

In today’s day and age, that is not so true anymore. We have the knowledge of the world available to us within seconds. Anything we can think of we can search for, and, very likely, quickly find the answer to. This is extremely powerful if taken advantage of.

Degrees are no longer necessary

Formal education degrees are often no longer necessary. There are of course exceptions, but far and few between anymore, and likely less so as technology advances.

The cost of many degrees is astronomical and often isn't worth the investment. In some cases, it could be better to finance those years of education by working at a job that pays more than your degree would make you if you were to get one, which in my opinion should never be the case.

Many companies are no longer even requiring formal degrees as there are more options than ever to get an education or pick up new skills.

Formal education will not be able to survive with the current model and will need to change and adapt sooner than later.

Learning on your own has never been easier

There are hundreds of topics that have virtually unlimited resources available for learning, in most cases for free. From photography and videography, marketing, writing, public speaking, and especially all things computer science - it’s all available for learning.

Just because there is content available for us, does not mean that everyone will or can take advantage of it. I understand that. But I do believe that the majority of us can with a little focus and self-discipline.

If you have the necessary discipline to be self-taught, I would argue that you can learn a lot more relevant skills more quickly than through traditional education.

Not only are there more distractions that come along with traditional education, but it’s also built around educating a large group of people at the same time, and not everyone moves or understands at the same pace.

When you provide yourself with some structure and the right resources to learn on your own, it can get you a lot further than you might think.

All of this is not to say that school is not a perfectly valid option for some, but more so to point out that it is no longer the only option.
